This is an excellent silver-gilt anointing spoon, made in 1901 for presentation, in 1902, at the coronation of Edward VII. Of 12th century medieval design it replicates the much larger spoon used during part of the ceremony. The Archbishop of Canterbury pours oil from the Ampulla a hollow, gold, eagle shaped vessel into the Anointing Spoon, which is part of The Crown Jewels. The oil is then applied to the head, breast and palms of the sovereign being crowned. This item, contained within its original box, was made by Wakely and Wheeler, London, for Carrington and Co. Jewellers to the King and Queen in Regent Street and holders of the Royal Warrant. The handle has early motifs including a lion terminal and the bowl has serpentine foliate engravings. The case is also in excellent order, with strong hinges and a catch that snaps shut. The condition of the piece is excellent with no damage, and the hallmarks are exceptionally clear. NB: The gilding is not rubbed - reflected light intrudes into the photographs.
Length: 15 cm (Just under 6 inches)
Width of bowl: 3.5 cm (Approx. I.25 inches)
Weight: 34 grams
Length of box: 20cm (8 inches)
