Very Rare Set of 8 Yew Wood Windsor Chairs William Wheatland Retford

18th century
Description

A Rare Set of Eight Yew Wood Windsor chairs, made by William Wheatland. In circa 1820 William was making Windsor Chairs in the town of East Retford, his chairs had certain charecteristics one being the spindles were morticed right through the seat unique to Williams chairs , he also scribed a scratch mould around the perimiter of the seats and a similar mark around the edge of the top hoop, in 1825 he moved to a new village being built called Rockley 5 miles from Retford and set up a workshop there with another chair maker George Nicholson, after the move he stopped using these unique charectoristics on his chairs, this helps us to date these eight chairs to his Retford period of chair making. William was a Methodist Minister and set too building a small chapel next to his workshop unfortunatly he ran out of funds and left the workshop and chapel in 1830, George Nichlson carried on the tradition.

These eight chairs are therefore very rare and quite early as Windsor Chairs go, the condition is very good with only very slight variations in dimensions, they have probably always been together and would have been supplied as a set, They have a very pleasing colour and a good patina.

circa 1820
