S.s. Atlas Hartlepool Ship Portrait Chinese School Oil Painting Framed

1900 - 1920
Description

Good unsigned Chinese School / China Trade ships portrait, circa 1900,

The cargo merchant ship 'Atlas'

Built 1897 by Rickinson Sons & Co, West Hartlepool, Sunderland

Torpedoed without warning and sunk by a German submarine14 February 1918 with no casualties.

http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?12749

Highly detailed view of the ship in choppy water, a bright and breezy day, sailing boats in the distance.

Oil on fine woven canvas or linen laid onto board, good bright and clean, glazed and framed.

Some slight bubbles between the canvas and board, light surface dirty smudges, otherwise all in excellent condition, no restoration or repair.

The contemporary glazed plaster gilt frame with some losses, old worm holes to the back, still good and sound, would restore well.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinese School ship portraits were produced by artisan painters in Chinese treaty ports during the 19th and early 20th centuries, created primarily for Western ship captains and merchants desiring a detailed visual record of their vessel.

These works typically used oil paints applied to stretched canvas or wooden panels, housed within carved giltwood, plaster, or painted pine frames.

Key features include a broadside profile perspective of the vessel, distinctive stylised linear wave rendering, meticulous rigging detail, and subtle atmospheric sky grading unique to port artisans of the era.

A framed nautical oil painting functions effectively above a hallway console table, within a library or study setting, or integrated into a gallery wall alongside wood or brass accents.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, dusting the frame lightly with a soft brush while avoiding chemical cleaners or water on the paint surface.
