Alfred Worthington (1837-1925) is celebrated as the last of the artisan painters in Wales. Born in Dover the son of a naval lieutenant he is believed to have earned a living as a trapper in Canada before returning to England and then moving to Aberystwyth for his health in the early 1870’s. He established a photography studio in the town and, though he had no formal training also produced a prodigious amount of painted works for locals and the booming tourist trade. Typical subjects include local sites, maritime scenes and animals. He also produced works in enamel and painted on slate. Ceredigion museum holds a collection of his work.
