Worcester ‘Hop Trellis’ Teabowl & Saucer, C. 1770.

18th century
Description

A fine Worcester porcelain teabowl and saucer, c. 1770. Both fluted items, beautifully decorated in Sevres style, with continuous bands of berries growing on vine, suspended from trellis. Having turquoise ‘scale’ borders, heightened with gilding.

Height of teabowl - 3.5 cm, 1 1/2”.

Diameter of saucer - 12.2 cm, 4 3/4”.

Condition - Small chip to the reverse of the saucer. Typical minor wear to the gilding. Please see images for detail. No restoration.

This pattern, used at Worcester from about 1770-80, is based on that used at Sevres, in the previous decade. Whilst the design on the current example, clearly does not depict hop bines, the name has been associated with this and variants of the pattern since the 19th century, when the hop growing industry in Worcestershire, was at its height.
