Description

A delightful scene of a woman (possibly a self-portrait) knitting or crocheting by the window of a country cottage in Sussex. The theme of this picture is reminiscent of an oil painting we had several years ago by the same artist. What looks to be the same woman is sitting by a window in her front living-room only reading a book. The painting can be viewed under the artist's name in our archive of sold pictures on our website. Radnorshire Fine Arts Ltd.
Signed: E. L. Rawlins (lower right). Watercolour and bodycolour on paper. Presented in a new mount with a clear polyester cover for protection. No frame. This watercolour has been cleaned and preserved by an accredited paper conservator.
Ethel Louise Rawlins (c.1880-1940) studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and in Newlyn, Cornwall, possibly at the Forbes School. She settled in Sussex in the early 1920s, then about 12 years later making her home in Ditchling, where she continued to live. Rawlins illustrated for The Studio and was a prolific exhibitor in London and Paris, she was a member of WIAC and SWA also showing at RA, RBA, RE, RHA, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and elsewhere.
