These charming, presumably from life, landscape studies were painted by the famous Scottish sculptor William Brodie in the mid-1800s.
The top shows a highland landscape, complete with mountainous background and a red flag raised by a loch to the foreground. The middle seems to have been painted with a coastal cove. The bottom is shows a distant landscape enveloped by a vivid sunset, with a frigate in the middle distance.
William Brodie RSA (1815 1881) was born in Banff. Originally trained as a plumber, he studied modelling at the Mechanics' Institute in Aberdeen, then at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh (1846-50), completing his studies in Rome (1853). One of his early works completed under the guidance of Laurence MacDonald, 'Corinna, the Lyric Muse' was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1855 and then reproduced in Copeland Parian ware in 1856. Over subsequent decades Brodie established himself as a leading portrait sculptor, and had a large studio employing up to eight men and eight boys (1871). He received important commissions for funerary monuments and architectural works. He died in Edinburgh of heart disease.
Frame with some minor losses along bottom edge, backing board, from which the watercolours are mounted is discoloured. Otherwise the artworks themselves survive in very good condition.
