William Tonks for the Savoy Grill, London - Magazine Rack C.1910

1900 - 1920
Sold by Puckerings
Description

A fabulous find and superior quality. This early twentieth century magazine rack was made by the top-notch manufacturer, William Tonks and Sons of Birmingham, England with the famous trade mark impressed into the solid Oak base -

WT&S' with a stylised sun.

Alongside this impressed mark is the mark for the famous London "Savoy Grill".

From the 1900s, the Savoy Grill became the place to be, and be seen, in theatreland. Evenings would see the dining room overtaken by actors and directors after performances, while during the day, ‘creative types’ (writers, critics, composers and producers) would gather for long lunches and attract wannabe young actors and actresses looking for parts. With the growth of the film industry, Hollywood stars were soon flocking to London where the Grill gave them a chance to escape the hounding of the press. A street entrance (where the wine collection now lives) meant the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Judy Garland, Errol Flynn and Elizabeth Taylor could enter without the pomp and ceremony of the main hotel foyer, and dine in peace with the knowledge that staff at the Grill were known for their discretion.

Wonderful quality and condition dating to c.1910 it remains in superb condition having been professionally cleaned and polished by our silversmith.

14" x 7 1/2" x 15" tall to top of handle.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
