The six plain Georgian spoons re worked as a set, each inscribed;
FROM (crown) VR ( monogram) CHRISTMAS 1880
This boxed set would have been given by Queen Victoria herself as a gift for Christmas 1880.
At this time she was widowed and celebrated Christmas with children and grand-children at Osbourne House in the Isle of Wight.
The Queen would have given Christmas presents to her tenants, her personal servants, her ladies in waiting as well as numerous family members, all carefully graded according to the position and rank of the recipient. Queen Victoria was a generous patron of the arts with a good eye, as can be witnessed in her collections amassed in her houses and palaces, especially Osbourne House, where these spoons were almost certainly given, her private family sanctuary devoted to pleasure, high days and holidays.
The later decorated berry spoon has often been marked down by modern silver collectoing purists, this set''s documentary top-of-the-tree aristocratic pedigree shows that this view was clearly not one subscribed to in the nineteenth century.
