An exquisite Aesthetic Style ebonised piece by a niche maker from the period 1860-85 and in very good condition for its age, with rolled & scrolled back, upholstered with a machine embroidered pale decorative fabric trimmed with gold braid, framed by acanthus carved shoulders, shaped arms with under-stated scrolled hand-holds on turned & blocked supports, over fretwork side panels with interlocking elliptical motif, enclosing a shield-shaped frame with drop-in squab, on five turned & tapering legs united by slender turned spindles radiating from a central turned boss with finial, this lovely little chair oozes charm and will delight in any elegant, period-furnished salon or boudoir and is guaranteed to attract the envious attention of your guests.
O/All Width 54.5cm x Depth 64.5cm (21.5" x 25.5"), Height at Centre of Back 74cm (29.25") & Height to Seat Frame 33.5cm (13.25")
Maximum Seat Width at Front 46cm (18") & Seat Depth 45cm (17.75")
This is a Victorian piece from the second half of the 19thC, so you may expect the mature character & patina that only develops with considerable age, including some wear to the upper surface of the ebonised arms but, otherwise, frame & upholstery are in very good, clean & sound condition for the age of the chair and it's ready to use in your home.
NB: There is the maker's paper label on the rear of the squab frame, revealed by velcro fixings on the lining fabric, for George Maddox, Upholsterer of 21 Baker St., London W & (20-21 Blandford Mews). There is also a hand-written adhesive label added by a previous owner, located on the inside of the seat frame, with the same information on it but you could easily remove this with a moist sponge, if you so wish.
