Queen Anne Oak and Burr Elm Chest

18th century
Description

Queen Anne oak and burr elm chest

This Queen Anne oak and burr elm chest was made circa 1700.

Made predominantly of oak and with the drawers fronted with burr elm with herringbone crossbanding and finishing with walnut half round cock beading. Each drawer with pear drop brass handles with star back plates.

It would have been made for one of the large estate cottages on a large country estate, the estate carpenter would have used that had fallen and farmed the timber for use on such pieces. After years of seasoning he would have selected the oak and used the more attractive burr elm to use on the front. Due to the grain burr oak is quite difficult to work with, therefore he used it sparingly especially as he had to cut it by hand. A very time consuming and skilled job.

At this time there were no mechanical means to plane and cut the timber, so it was tough building these pieces.

The Queen Anne oak and burr elm chest stands on wonderful large bun feet with straight stile feet to the rear.

Imagine this most wonderful Queen Anne oak and burr elm chest in your home. Its colour and patina are stunning and you will not be able to resist running your hand along the silky surface.
