He was the son of Henry Stannard, and studied at South Kensington. The artist painted both landscape and rustic subjects.

Stannard had many imitators, particularly of the ‘cottage door’ variety, but few equals. Among the better practitioners of the genre along with Stannard were Helen Allingham, Myles Birket Foster and Arthur Claude Strachan. Stannard’s watercolours of picturesque old cottages enjoy almost worldwide fame. Stannard exhibited fifteen works at the Royal Academy and Suffolk Street. His Patrons include the Royal Family.
