Most of these mould were destroyed in the war as they were melted down for money. Historians believe that the earliest jelly baby was meant to be jelly bears but the resulting sweets looked more like new born infants and were subsequently given the ghoulish name ...'unclaimed babies' . There is a large article that the BBC wrote on the dark side of the Jelly Babies which you can find on the Internet.
