Antique Victorian Tunbridge Ware Writing Slope Box

19th century
Description

A lovely antique writing slope made of walnut with Tunbridge Ware banding, a brass escutcheon and matching brass cartouche. Inside, the box is fitted with a good quality red leather writing surface with a gilt tooled edge. There is a pen tray, stamp slope and a small lidded compartment. It also has a glass inkwell. Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding two small drawers which springs open when a piece of wood on the far side of the box is lifted up. The box comes with its original working key.

It is in good condition for its age. There are no major losses to the tunbridge ware. There are some signs of age and use, some light marks, small chips and some shrinkage splits. There is one particular split on the front corner which I have photographed. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and it displays very well inside and out.
