Early C19th Regency Period Mahogany and Ebony String-inlaid Fold-over Card or Games Table .

Description

Early C19th Regency period mahogany and ebony string-inlaid fold-over card or games table.

Regency D-shaped mahogany table with fold-over , swivel-action top with crimson baize-lined interior and playing surface . When turned the top reveals a baize-lined storage compartment for cards and gaming accessories.

The mahogany top with decorative ebony string inlay , the frieze below with corresponding ebony inlay and a central figured mahogany flame-veneered tablet .

The top raised on an elegant central turned pillar with alternate rings of polished mahogany and ebonised segments, The base with a concave-sided shaped platform with further ebony-string decoration, and supported on quadruple scrolled and shaped ‘sabre’ legs , fitted with the original cast brass foliate-wrapped design box-toe castors and wheels .

In good original condition , rich patina with minor historic ring marks and stains to the top . The crimson felt , or baize, in excellent unmarked condition having apparently been replaced in recent years .

The use of ebony inlaid decoration on mahogany furniture of this Regency period , signified the mourning of the nation for the death in action , of the great Naval hero Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson in 1805 .

An elegant , decorative and practical table with the added benefit of having multiple purposes and uses .
