Egyptology fired the nineteenth century cultural imagination, particularly in France and Britain.
Teams of archeologists from both countries carried out rival excavations in Egypt, the French funded by the state and the British by wealthy enthusiasts.
Egyptomania was explored in literature as well as reflected in fine and decorative arts. Activities ranged from intellectually demanding endeavours like translating the Rosetta stone, to the sensational, such as seances and tea parties to unwrap mummified cats!
