A beautiful stipple engraving depicting the ancient Roman romantic tragedy of Sophonisba and Massinissa.
After a series of wars and intrigues the warrior king Massinissa was finally able to marry Sophonisba, the niece of Hannibal.
Alliances changed and the Romans insisted that Massinissa reject his new bride, instead of divorcing her, he passed her poison so she might kill herself rather than undergo her humiliation.
In this vivid imagining the beautiful Sophonisba is seated on a draped throne elevated on a dais with a stone lion at her feet. She receives the poison challis proffered by Massinissa, her handmaiden stricken with grief.
Engraved by the English portrait painter and engraver John Samuel Agar (1773–1858) after a work by the English artist Edward Francis Burney (1760–1848).
This fine neoclassical engraving was published in 1801 by the Rudolph Ackermann the famous publisher and proprietor of Akermann’s Repository of arts in the Strand.
The Repository became a fashionable place for the upper classes of London to visit to indicate their good taste and sophistication.
