We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A plane table surveyors compass is a specialised magnetic direction-finding instrument engineered to clamp directly onto a field drawing board or plane table. Used extensively during the 19th and early 20th centuries, it allowed cartographers and land surveyors to align field charts accurately with magnetic north while plotting topography.

Historical surveying compasses were primarily constructed from solid brass due to its non-magnetic properties, which prevented interference with the internal needle. Dials were protected by glass covers, while internal pivots featured hardened steel components or gemstone bearings to ensure smooth rotation.

Authentic pieces generally feature maker stamps, patent numbers, or serial markings hand-engraved or stamped directly onto the metal casing. Genuine antique examples also display natural patina on the brass surface, knurled adjusting screws, and period-appropriate typography on the compass rose.

These compact scientific instruments function as excellent accent pieces on executive desks, open bookshelves, or sideboards. Displaying the item alongside leather-bound volumes, framed historical maps, or under a glass cloche highlights its industrial geometry and historic character.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to clean brass scientific instruments. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, as these can strip the original surface patination and erase historical maker marks; store in a humidity-controlled setting to prevent copper green oxidisation.
