Antique Figural Inkwell - Greyfriars Bobby - Dog - C.1880

19th century
Sold by Puckerings
Description

An absolutely stunning Victorian a heavy cast copper and brass inkwell in the form of "Greyfriars Bobby". I will be leaving the story of this wonderful Skye Terrier at the end of this description.

The base is created from polished brass with a think rope decoration where the dog's head joins the base. The dog's head is absolutely stunning, beautifully executed with wonderful detailing, including his original two glass eyes.

The head opens with the hinge in good working order, revealing the ink chamber within.

Museum quality with the head having been untouched with a wonderful antique patina which should really remain unpolished, you just can't buy this aged originality.

Excellent all round condition, with a base diameter 7" and standing 5 1/2" tall.

Now for the story ...

In 1858, a man named John Gray was buried in old Greyfriars Churchyard. His grave levelled by the hand of time, and unmarked by any stone, became scarcely discernible; but, although no human interest seemed to attach to it.

The sacred spot was not wholly disregarded or forgotten. For fourteen years the dead man's faithful dog kept constant watch and guard over the grave until his own death in 1872.

The famous Skye Terrier, Greyfriars Bobby was so devoted to his master John Gray, even in death, for fourteen years Bobby lay on the grave only leaving for food.

It is reported that a daily occurance of people from all walks of life would stand at the entrance of the Kirkyard waiting for the one o'clock gun and the appearance of Bobby leaving the grave for his midday meal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
