Striking, decorative and high quality pair of Anglo Indian / Mughal antique portrait miniature paintings, circa 1825
A wealthy and flamboyant couple, possibly Europeans in native dress or a dual heritage marriage. Many of the Rajput nobility, at least those who were not too far from Delhi, would seem to have maintained houses in the city and hence could be portrayed in contemporary fashion.
Typical of the Company style, patronized by James Skinner.
Both sitters wearing fabulous costumes blazing with jewels, including face jewel and thumb ring on the lady, both smoking hookah pipes.
Their attributes, dagger, book and pet parakeet show high status, leisure, learning and luxury.
The artist has combined beautifully detailed Mughal interiors with a typically staged curtain swag and window views popular with British portrait artists throughout the nineteenth century.
Finely hand painted in gouache and gilt on panels mounted with mica covers and original slips, later fram
...ed.
In excellent bright condition with no splits, warps repairs or excessive damage, noting minor losses particularly to the distant tree line behind the lady, the sky lit with stars.
Image sizes, lady 4'' x 3,1/2'' or 102mm x 89mm / man 4'' x 3'' or 102mm x 76mm
Gross weight 417 grams.
