English ‘trap door’ portable marine barometer, circa 1830
Solid well figured mahogany throughout.
Hand engraved brass makers plate Gowland London James Gowland is recorded making marine barometers in London 1830 (Websters)
Trap door opening to reveal the silvered brass hand engraved weather conditions and scale with sliding vernier, the thermometer missing from inside of door.
Bone bushes for gimbaled suspention.
All original finishes throughout, no restoration or repair, holes in the top back from later mounting plate.
The mercury is not present, the boxwood cistern, glass tube and brass housing are all intact.
Some fairly straight forward work will bring this fine piece into good working order.
