Description

Pencil and watercolour on paper (c1839). Beautifully mounted, framed, and glazed. Provenance: Walter Coleridge Richmond, son of the artist; thence by descent in the Richmond family.
In the last year of his stay in Italy 1837-1839, Richmond wrote a long letter to Joseph Severn, summing up his artistic experience in the Serenissima. Close to the end of the letter, he writes; ‘ ‘ I made a number of little sketches while I stayed, just taking the plan of some of the finest works, and I shall do this wherever I go, Since I came here I have made ten water-colours of the best pictures in the Belle Arti, which I think will be of use to me.
The Accademia di Belle Arti, is home to the painting “Christ Praying in the Garden” by Marco Basaiti.
George Richmond RA was an English painter and portraitist. In his youth, he was a member of The Ancients, a group of followers of William Blake. Later in life, he established a career as a portrait painter, which included painting the portraits of the British gentry, nobility, and royalty.
