Early Victorian desk top steelyard postal letter scales, circa 1840
 
The beam to weigh 1/2 oz up to 4 oz.
 
Marked S.P&SONS WARRANTED for Simcox Pemberton & Sons 42 Livery Street Birmingham.
 
Fine roccoco cast iron base, the beam is steel, the rest is a mix of darkened and lacquered brass, steel bushes and pivots.
 
The scales are accurate when tested with weights, the steep angle of the letter pan is correct.
 
Good patinated surface throughout, not recently cleaned or polished.
 
In very good sound condition and working order, noting that the small steel pointer on the beam is missing its tip..
 
Length of base 6,7/8?, gross weight 847 grams
