Description

George II Figured Walnut Longcase clock by John Coates c1750
This stunning figured walnut longcase clock case has been fully restored by a professional cabinet maker with over 40 years of experience and has to be seen to be fully appreciated. When acquired the case was in a very original state being very dry, but not rotten. All of the joints had dried out and this made it an ideal clock to restore using the 270 year old techniques that would have been used originally.
The case was carefully labelled and dismantled as much as it needed, and was rebuilt using the traditional glues that would have been available back then. when the case was stable, we researched the finishes that would have been applied and discovered from an original Georgian Cabinetmaker's book that the finish for figured walnut is an application of pure linseed oil to make the grain "pop" and then followed by real Shellac. All i can say is that the clock look amazing! i also smells lovely as well... we believe that this is as close to the original finish that could be achieved using traditional techniques and materials. It is not often that we get a chance to start from scratch regarding a 270 year old clock and the results show the standard of workmanship our cabinet maker has.
The beautifully made five pillar movement is currently being overhauled in the workshop and will have a full three year. guarantee for your peace of mind.
This is a a rare opportunity to purchase a George II figured walnut longcase that had never been restored before and has been carefully conserved using the most traditional of techniques to bring it back to splendour..
