This is a really super example of Aldridge's work, dating from around 1900. It is in excellent condition. The scene is set at Teignmouth with the square rigged ships docked and the barge boats crossing the River Teign unloading cargo from the larger boats. These lighter barge boats are flat bottomed, have no sails but are instead steered with a long oar - a really skilled job. You can make out the old Shaldon bridge in the distance.
Frederick James Aldridge was a Landscape and seascape Painter painting in oils and watercolour. He lived and worked in Worthing, Sussex and exhibited at the Royal Academy 1896-1901 . There is a suggestion that this one was in one of the exhibitions - a pencil inscription on the reverse.
Signed lower right. Framed and glazed.
