Corvidae Antique has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
When held up to the light, the cameo is an incredible shade of orange, very like cornelian (AKA carnelian).

Signed on the back, the brooch has a bail at the centre on the reverse, which probably originally connected to a safety chain but could easily be used to wear the cameo as a pendant.
In very good antique condition. There are a few tiny nibbles at the edges of the white stone (along the helmet edge and bottom left) but these in no way detract from the cameo's impact when worn. No cracks or stress lines.
