Antique Arts and Crafts Walnut Pedestal Desk

19th century
Description

A beautiful antique walnut desk in the arts and crafts taste dating from the late 19th century. It has an arrangement of 9 drawers around a central kneehole although the top 2 drawers on each pedestal are double depth with a false double front. Each drawer has their original gothic style brass drop handles and matching escutcheons. It has a leather writing surface with gold tooling around the edge which has worn to a wonderful aged patina over the years.

The whole piece is excellent quality with ebony stringing around the drawers, on the sides and even the insides. The reverse side of the desk has been neatly finished with more ebony stringing and good uality panels so the desk can be used as a centre piece as well as against a wall. The central drawer is stamped with the makers name "Bulstrode, Cambridge"

The kneehole is a good size for working at, measuring approximately 17 1/4" (44cm) wide x 23 3/4" (60cm) high.

The desk is in good condition for its age and has been well looked after. It has a lovely rich patina and the drawers open well. The inside of the drawers are generally clean and tidy with just some minor ink stains. There are some normal light signs of age and use, some knocks and light marks and a few old shrinkage splits around the top but nothing detrimental and the leather surface is in good condition. The desk has been cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
