Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian writing tables were produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) and are characterized by solid hardwood construction, functional frieze drawers, and turned or carved legs. They often feature gilt-tooled leather surfaces designed to facilitate handwriting.

These tables were typically crafted from mahogany, walnut, or oak, with drawers featuring hand-cut dovetail joints. Inset writing surfaces were commonly made from skiver leather, often decorated with blind or gold tooling along the edges.

Look for signs of age such as natural wear to the leather surface, hand-cut dovetails inside the drawers, original brass or wooden knob handles, and castors on the leg bases. Authentic 19th-century drawer linings often use pine or oak secondary timber.

Position the desk against a plain backdrop to highlight its rich wood tones, pairing it with a contemporary task lamp or modern accent chair. Its compact proportions allow it to function as a compact work desk, hallway console, or dressing table.

Keep the wood nourished with high-grade beeswax polish, avoiding silicone spray cleaners. Clean the leather insert using a slightly damp cloth followed by a specialised leather balm to prevent drying and cracking.
