Description

An oversized Victorian sterling silver locket dating from the 1880s. The hand-engraved design of a flying swallow with fern detail on the front is absolutely typical of the Aesthetic period, with fabulous multi-layered star framing.

For the Victorians swallows represented enduring love and loyalty, as the swallow mates for life. A flying swallow was traditionally considered good luck in England.

The locket is empty inside, with ample space for small keepsakes or pills - or of course a photograph!

The overall condition of the locket is very good and it's a nice solid piece; there are a few small pits on the back (see photos). The bail and hinge are in excellent condition and the clasp snaps securely shut with a click.

Hallmarked for Birmingham sterling silver c.1885.
