This ceramic mug does I believe celebrate the experimental Passenger Express Train Fury, which used high steam pressure. Unfortunately Fury proved not to be a success and the venture ended in 1834. The mug is cylindrical in shape, transfer printed and hand tinted. The Train as can be seen has the name Fury on it. And Fury and it's carriages are also decorated on the inside rim and is a different design from that of the outside. There are makers marks on the bottom of E.J which I believe refer to the Staffordshire Potter Elijah Jones, along with the words 'Hurra for the Railway'. I believe this mug would date to circa 1831.
The mug is not in perfect condition. There is a crack on the rim by the handle although this does appear to be under the glaze and there is another similar but smaller one further along the rim with a tiny chip just above the final blue carriage. There is also a flaw to the transfer print running from the hills to the ladies in the final open air carriage. In the interior there is marking which again appears to be under the glaze. Please see all photos.
Dimensions - Height 3&7/8" / 9.5cm, Diameter at Rim 4" / 10cm, Diameter at Base 4&1/8" / 10.5cm
