Very Large Decorative Painting of the Annunciation Dated 1908.

1900 - 1920
Description

Very large and decorative ecclesiastical painting of the Annunciation dated 1908. Over seven feet long, painted in oil on canvas overlaid with a wooden frame, also painted. The Archangel Gabriel visits Mary to announce she is to give birth to the son of God. The scrolling banner carries a version of the Ave Maria (Gabriel’s salutation to the Virgin) whilst the book on the lectern pronounces Ecce Virgo Partet Filium – The Virgin will bear a son. In an interesting merging of styles the Angel Gabriel and The Virgin are painted in an early Renaissance manner against a remarkably exuberant background of various flowering plants growing from a vase in the middle of the composition and dominated by a large sunflower head. Painted in a flat stylised manner without scale or depth the floral ground has a strong flavour of the Arts & Crafts movement (whose designers took great inspiration from medieval art of course). The painting is inscribed in Latin the lower left hand corner as being by Jul. Roegiers Parochus and dated in Roman numerals for 1908, with a dedication to Mary in the lower right hand corner. Very good original condition.

Dimensions: length 86", height 42".
