Collinge Antiques has dated this piece to the Edwardian era.
In an interesting merging of styles the Angel Gabriel and The Virgin are painted in an early Renaissance manner against a remarkably exuberant background of various flowering plants growing from a vase in the middle of the composition and dominated by a large sunflower head. Painted in a flat stylised manner without scale or depth the floral ground has a strong flavour of the Arts & Crafts movement (whose designers took great inspiration from medieval art of course). The painting is inscribed in Latin the lower left hand corner as being by Jul. Roegiers Parochus and dated in Roman numerals for 1908, with a dedication to Mary in the lower right hand corner. Very good original condition.
