Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bookcases from the mid-Victorian era combine functional storage with understated decorative elements such as gothic arched door panels and simple moulded cornices. Constructed primarily from dark hardwoods like mahogany, these pieces were designed for practical storage in country residences rather than elaborate formal drawing rooms.

Mid-nineteenth-century glazed bookcases typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneer over pine cores, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, and original floating glass panes within the upper doors. Lower doors generally enclose solid timber shelves, secured with period brass escutcheons and mortise locks.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of period hand craftsmanship, including irregularities in glass thickness, hand-planed back boards, and natural oxidisation inside the timber cabinet work. Look for traditional door hinges, original lock mechanisms, and a natural, age-earned patina across the mahogany surface.

Position the piece against contemporary neutral or deeply toned walls to highlight the warm mahogany tones. Use the glazed upper section to display curated ceramics, glassware, or books, while utilising the lower timber cupboard for concealed storage.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a soft lint-free cloth and applying a microcrystalline or beeswax polish once or twice per year. Keep the cabinet positioned away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or fading of the mahogany colour.
