Oak Six Plank Chest C.1660.

17th century
Description

17th.c. oak six plank chest or coffer c.1660. Constructed from six solid oak boards and fitted inside with a small compartment, the hinged lid forming a stay for the chest lid. Simple thumb moulded detail to the edges of the lid, applied base trim and unusual shaped detail to the legs. Iron hinges and lock plate. Unusually the inside of the lid carries a carved inscription `Ann Vines 1799`. Front right hand leg is a replacement, otherwise good condition. Solid and sturdy with a particularly good colour.
