Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1850s.
The box itself is of finely-figured mahogany, profusely inlaid with brass-work and inset with a vacant shaped brass cartouche to the lid, with matching key escutcheon to the front and recessed military-style handles to either side.
It also retains its original pair of brass candlesticks which fit into two small holes, specifically used for writing after dark. Complete with its original (working) key.
