Description

Here we see a beautiful 'engsi' (yurt door rug) of the Teke tribe, made around 1870-1880 in the Merv Oasis, Turkmenistan.

The engsi was used as a hanging at the entrance of the Turkmen yurt and the design shows an extra panel at the base of the rug which symbolised the gateway to Paradise with the cross design in the field, symbolising the four gardens of Paradise.

The madder-red is stunning and the overall condition is excellent, bar an old small repair in the centre where it sustained a small tear at some point in the past. The repair is strong and will not cause any problem on the floor, but I am selling the engsi as seen. However, the tear can be expertly restored if required.

Size: 1.40 x 1.30m (4' 7" x 4' 3").
