Rare Victorian Silver Snake Scent Bottle by Saunders & Shepherd, Birmingham 1896

Description

This unusual silver mounted crystal scent bottle was made by the celebrated silversmiths Saunders & Shepherd and is dated Birmingham 1896.The top is inset with a ruby cabochon, and a silver snake with ruby eyes is coiled round the glass, its head on the collar.

Hallmarks:

CS*FS for Cornelius Desormeaux Saunders & James Francis Hollings Shepherd.

Birmingham Assay Mark.

Lion Passant.

Date letter "w" for 1896..

Dimensions:

Height: 6.5cm / 2.4 inches.

Diameter: 1.5cm / 0.6 inches.

Condition:

Very good.

No damage to the glass.

Silver top in very good , smooth condition.

Strong hinge.

Original stopper.

One garnet eye a little bigger than the other, possibly a replacement.
