Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sailors fid is a conical tool used by mariners to open strands of rope when splicing or working with heavy canvas. During the 19th century, sailors used these wooden implements aboard sailing vessels to maintain ship rigging and sails.

Fids were typically hand-turned from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, lignum vitae, or boxwood, as well as marine materials like bone or ivory. Dense hardwoods were favoured for their durability and smooth surface, which prevented rope fibers from snagging during use.

Authentic period fids display natural wear, subtle asymmetry from hand-turning, and deep oxidisation or patina acquired from decades of handling and wax polish. Scribed lines or turned pommels near the base were common decorative and functional features.

A sailors fid functions as a sculptural accent when displayed on a library bookshelf, styled alongside brass instruments, or arranged in a glass cloche. Its compact form and rich wood grain add tactile historical interest to contemporary desks and display cabinets.

Keep dense wood tools away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent cracking or warping. Dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and periodically apply a thin coat of natural beeswax polish to protect the timber and retain the surface patina.
