Spode Etruscan Cup & Saucer Serpent Handle C.1817 Pattern 878

19th century
Description

Very stylish Spode etruscan shape cup and saucer with a serpent handle with coiled tail at the lower terminal, c.1817-1825. The saucer has a small well in the centre to hold the cup steady, not as deep as a trembleuse style, more to prevent the cup sliding about I would think but an unusual feature. Bold decoration with a bright orange ground with stylised white flowers on a coiling gilded vine, pattern number 878. Wide gilt rims and gilded detail to the snake handle. Both pieces marked SPODE 878 in red.

The cup measures 6.3cm (2 1/2") high, 9.2cm (3 7/8") rim to rim and 11.7cm (4 1/2") rim to handle. The saucer measures 15cm (5 7/8") wide and 2.5cm (1") high.

Condition is very good with no damage or restoration. There is a little surface wear, mainly in a few spots to the gilded bands in the centre of the saucer, and a very little to the rim. The cup has very minor wear to the lower edge of the enamel band in a couple of places.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
