Description

St. Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians, composers, instrument makers, and poets.

This beautiful stipple engraving depicts her in a three-quarter length pose, seated at an organ which she plays with her right hand. She looks towards the heavens where there is a cherub peering through the clouds.
Engraved by the English engraver and draughtsman William Nutter (17591802) after a painting by the English miniaturist and watercolour painter Samuel Shelley (1750-1808).
A fine and clear impression printed on a laid paper in bister stipple within a fine period Hogarth frame with textured sight edge.
