Antique English Mahogany & Polished Brass Postal or Letter Scales

Description

A charming pair of.desk-top letter scales dating to around 1900, late Victorian or Edwardian in era.

The solid Mahogany base has a decorative serpentine front and stands on it's original four bun feet.

The apparatus is made from solid English brass, having recently been professionally polished to gleam. The letter pan is engraved with the postal rates at the time: "Inland Letter Post Not Exceeding 4oz 1D (one penny) / Each Additional 2oz 1/2D (half penny)".

There are four weights: 4oz / 2oz / 1oz and 1/2oz. The 2oz doesn't have the inner circle engraved so could possibly be a period replacement (mentioned purely for accuracy).

A wonderful set in excellent condition, the base measuring 8" x 4 3/8" and standing 3 3/4" tall.
