The top swivels to allow a person to sit at the desk. Below this is an arrangement of four graduated drawers, each with a bone diamond escutcheon. The davenport stands on four elegant bun feet raised on castors. This piece is veneered in superb flame mahogany veneers throughout, clearly demonstrating its high quality and fine craftsmanship. The piece was made by Wilkinsons & Sons Ltd, renowned 18th and 19th century cabinet makers. Originally established by Joshua Wilkinson in 1766, upon his death is 1790 the firm was taken over by his son, William Wilkinson, and his cousin Thomas Wilkinson. In 1808 William and his cousin parted ways which is when William set up his own workshops at 14 Ludgate Hill. Some of his earliest furniture was stamped Wilkinson LUDGATE HILL (as seen on this davenport). Upon his death in 1833 his sons took over the business and changed the stamp to W&C Wilkinson LUDGATE HILL.
Overall, this piece is in very good condition for its age, showing minor signs of wear commensurate with age and use.
