Description

This is a striking 17th Century hand carved figure of St Luke the Evangelist. The figure has St Luke in his usual pose carrying a gospel. At his feet is the bull the symbol usually associated with St Luke, representing strength and sacrifice. Both stand on a plinth carved with a cherubs face. The figure was originally painted and remnants of the original paint can be seen in the beard and folds in the robes. The piece is probably German.

There are a number of areas where the figure has suffered worm. This has been treated and stabilised to prevent any further losses.
