A very attractive late 19th century French Louis XV rococo style kingwood and marquetry bureau de dame retailed circa 1900 by the renowned firm S & H Jewell of London. Of bomb form and profusely inlaid with scrolling acanthus leaf and floral marquetry highlighted by crisply cast solid brass mouldings and mounts, the fall front opens on strong butterfly hinges to reveal a fitted interior in mahogany with burr walnut fronted drawers and the original dark burgundy tooled leather writing surface, with a single frieze drawer with and standing on elegant cabriole legs with scrolled brass sabot. With brass label for S & H Jewell, 29, 30 & 31 Little Queen Street, Holborn, WC
Believed to have been in the same family since purchase from S & H Jewell in circa 1900, with original key and both locks working, minor marks to the leather and some repairs to the crossbanding, overall wear commensurate with age, overall a lovely quality ladies desk.
