In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
Inside, the box is fitted with a good quality green leather writing surface with gilt tooled edge and it comes with a glass inkwell. Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding three small drawers which springs open when the piece of wood by the inkwell is lifted.
It is in good condition for its age. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and it displays very well inside and out. There are some signs of age and use and some small chips. Due to shrinkage there are a few old splits around the exterior of the box, the brass banding has slightly lifted on the top and when closed the top lid slightly lifts in one corner but overall it displays well. It is clean and tidy inside and comes with its original working key.
