Description

Superb quality and very unusual late 19th.c. mahogany display sideboard or dresser c.1900. Two tier rack with an enclosed centre and mirrored back panels. Supported on square columns over a deeper base with open shelves at the centre flanked with glazed display cabinets (also with mirrored back panels). Raised on legs joined with a long potboard display shelf.

An interesting example of the hybrid Reformed Gothic or Aesthetic style featuring a fascinating blend of design elements. Notice the Islamic arches and pommel finials at the sides of the rack – typical of the Moorish inspired designs of Liberty from around this time. Fine inlaid marquetry work frieze around the top of the base with Classical or Rennaisance motifs – very much in the manner of the celebrated Aesthetic Movement makers Collinson & Lock. The canted corners of the base and the narrowing apron below are also unusal, inspired by the forms of Arts & Crafts design, with the potboard borrowed from vernacular furniture. Unusual flared and carved block feet. The further satinwood inlaid detail and stringing to the horizontal elements, columns and legs is rather more typical of that found on Edwardian furniture. Very good original colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. Keys supplied.
