Just fantastic! I cannot praise this little rug enough! In near mint condition - only two tiny stains in the upper elam (skirt) - this ranks as one of the best and finest of Tekke Turkmen rugs I've seen. Made around 1860 in the Merv oasis, Turkmenistan, the wool is soft and silky and the madder-red colour glows. The elams are piled and complete at each end. Such small rugs in this fabulous quality were made by young girls as part of their wedding dowry and were highly prized and never intended for sale. It is said that such rugs were used at the wedding ceremony for the bride and groom to stand on and take their vows!
