Early C19th Regency period mahogany sarcophagus wine-cooler by Wilkinson of London .

Boldly-scaled mahogany wine-cooler of panelled sarcophagus form raised on exuberantly carved lions’ paw clawed feet. Signed and stamped by “Wilkinson Ludgate Hill “ and with a design or production number 11977 stamped to the inner front edge. The shaped and stepped lid with flattened central tablet , the inside of the lid is also polished when opened and the interior displayed .The top fitted with high quality gilded brass hinges and gilded brass folding ‘stays’ and graduated rests to support the raised lid .

The interior of the sarcophagus fitted with its original leaded zinc liner with divisions to provide water-proofed insulation for icing the contents. The base fitted with it’s original drainage hole and removable plug.

The body also fitted with the original brass lock stamped “Turners Patent Wolverhampton “ together with a Crown . (Key is lacking) .

The dramatically and skilfully carved lions’ paw and scrolling leaf design feet of fine quality with superb attention to detail. The undersides of the feet fitted with original sunken castors to aid movement.

The exaggerated angular form being that of an ancient sarcophagus, drawing from the ancient Classical Greek and Roman worlds , being the inspiration for the highly fashionable designs of the Regency period.

In excellent original condition, with a well-selected grade of mahogany which has achieved an excellent colour and patina. The lid with a mellow golden hue , having had exposure to sun-light , some minor historic marks and wear commensurate with age , use and purpose.

The cabinet-making firm of William Wilkinson of 14, Ludgate Hill and Old Bond Street , London are recorded as working from 1808-71.
