Plate 1 of a set of 6 plates which depict the story of Moll Hackabout, a harlot.
Hogarth incorporated the topics surrounding the official crackdown on prostitution in London at this time into A Harlot’s Progress, giving them resonance including references to real-life characters. In Plate 1 Moll is met by Elizabeth ‘Mother’ Needham, a notorious brothel keeper.

Condition report
This print is mounted on rough cut 1/16" grey card. It was framed on acquisition by me but it had deteriorated beyond repair and is presented out of a frame. The frame had last been repaired in 1937 in Belfast.
1) General light discolouration from smoke
2) Light stain to top rhs (as marked on photographs)
