Japanese Carved Wood Carp Okimono. Nishikawa Suketsugu, Meiji Period.

Description

A fine and large carved wood okimono, by Nishikawa Suketsugu, Meiji Period (1868-1912). Beautifully and naturistically carved as a large carp, it’s body curved slightly to the left, pushing through an imaginary current. Rendered with detailed scales, having double inlaid amber eyes, and horn pupils.

Signed in a rectangular reserve, Suketsugu.

With original tomobako.

Length - 40.7 cm, 16”.

Height - 12.7 cm, 5”.

Width - 12 cm, 4 3/4”.

Condition - Excellent. No damage. No restoration.
